Files are processed in your browser and never uploaded.

How it works

Unlock PDF online — free and private

Unlock PDF removes the password from a protected document so it opens without prompting every time. Enter the password you already use to open the file, and PDF10x produces a decrypted copy you can read, print and edit freely. It is perfect for files you own but that keep asking for a password you would rather not type again.

Everything happens in your browser using qpdf compiled to WebAssembly, so your document and its password are never uploaded. To keep a file private again after editing, re-apply a password with Protect PDF. Please only unlock documents you are authorized to access.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know the password?

Yes. This tool removes a password from a document you can already open — you must enter the correct password. It is not a way to break into files you are not authorized to access.

Is my file or password uploaded?

No. The document and password stay in your browser; decryption runs locally with qpdf compiled to WebAssembly. Nothing is transmitted to a server.

The file only asks for a password to edit, not to open — can you help?

Yes. If the PDF opens without a password but restricts editing or printing, the tool can usually remove those restrictions. Leave the password field empty and try unlocking.
